POSITION TITLE: Farm Safety Communications Intern (FT, term)

JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Farm Safety Communications Intern will assist with agricultural safety education and awareness programming for the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association.

LOCATION: 3325-C Pembina Highway, Winnipeg, MB R3V 0A2

REMUNERATION: $ 15.50/hr based on a 37.5 hr work week

TERM: 12 weeks starting June, 2017

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT:

Workplace Environment:

Established in 1995, the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association is the only official national association focussed on agricultural workplace health and safety. CASA’s vision is a country where no one is hurt farming and CASA works in concert with over 600 contacts and partners in government, business, and farming organizations across the country to support initiatives that equip producers, their families and their workers with the information and tools needed to make farms a safe place to live, work and play. CASA is funded in part by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada through Growing Forward 2, a federal, provincial, territorial initiative, with support from agribusiness and the agricultural sector.

CASA’s current complement includes an Executive Director, Administrative Manager, Communications Coordinator, Media and Communications Specialist, Agricultural Health and Safety Specialist, Development Officer and accounting services. In addition, CASA retains service providers on a contractual basis. CASA’s office is located in the neighbourhood of St. Norbert, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Primary Relationships:

This position reports to the CASA Executive Director. In addition, this position has primary relationships with the Agricultural Health and Safety Specialist, and the Communications Coordinator. There is continual contact with CASA staff colleagues to coordinate projects and exchange information.

 

NATURE AND SCOPE OF POSITION:

Decision Making:

Decisions are made in consultation with the Communications Coordinator and the Agricultural Health and Safety Specialist. This position has a significant degree of flexibility in terms of day-to-day planning.

 

 KEY ACCOUNTABILITES:

• To assist in staffing the Grain Safety Display at community events.

• To assist in providing logistical support for the coordination of 80 youth focused rural Safety Days across Canada.

• To assist in maintaining and updating the bilingual website, and compiling press clipping related to safety

• To assist in creating the bilingual newsletter and managing social media posts.

• To assist in developing communications materials in support of the Back to Ag, and BeGrainSafe programs as well as the FarmSafeFoundation.

• Other duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE NECESSARY:

Knowledge:

• Excellent proficiency in English, oral and written.

• Knowledge of French is an asset

• Demonstrated appreciation of agricultural culture and practice.

Skills:

• Ability to relate to varied audiences (farmers and academics).

• Ability to write and edit documents.

• Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel.

• Graphic design skills and experience working with Adobe programs including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.

• General office skills.

• Ability to maintain concentration as work is subject to frequent interruptions.

• Digital media skills in the areas of social media and content management would be considered an asset.

• Excellent interpersonal skills

Experience:

• Public speaking and presentation experience

• Experience in an office environment would be considered an asset.

• Although not essential, academic and/or practical experience in the fields of journalism, communications, and/or agriculture would be considered an advantage.

Formal Qualifications:

• Between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.

• Have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year.

• Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident and legally entitled to work in Canada.

• Have a valid driver’s license.
