Shari Hinz knows that keeping kids safe on the farm involves education. That’s why the Executive Director of Safe Communities Humboldt & Area in Saskatchewan says staff and volunteers have been holding Progressive Agriculture Safety Days annually since 2009. It’s the largest rural safety and health education program for children in North America.
“A high percentage of our youth either reside on a farm or often visit a farm,” explains Hinz.
Safe Communities Humboldt & Area Safety Days operate as part of an elementary school day, with support from the teachers, principal, professional presenters and volunteers. Participants are divided into classroom sized groups that rotate between stations focusing on safety topics ranging from animal safety, to farm implement and PTO safety, to chemical safety.
“If they remember just one item from the day, it can save a life,” says Hinz.
Safe Communities Humboldt & Area receives support from local sponsors to hold their annual Safety Day, along with granting dollars from CASA through the FCC Ag Safety Day Coordinator Fund.
