In an average year, Canada mourns the loss of over 60 adults and children due to agricultural fatalities. Canada’s agricultural sector is one of the most hazardous industries in which to work.
Producer groups, non-profits, government bodies, industry and researchers formed what is now the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) in 1993 to respond to issues of health and safety in agriculture.
As a national, non-profit organization, CASA promotes farm safety in the agricultural sector. CASA works with partners in government, business, and farming organizations across the country to support initiatives that equip producers, their families and their workers with the information and tools needed to make farms a safe place to live, work and play.
CASA is governed by a seven-person Board of Directors drawn from a membership base that includes individuals, organizations, governments and businesses.
The Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) operates on the traditional territory of First Nation, Inuit and Métis peoples from coast to coast to coast and acknowledges the inherent Indigenous Rights and Treaty Rights of all Indigenous Peoples across these lands.
CASA believes that health and safety includes fostering an inclusive environment, where everyone is welcomed. CASA’s vision for a safe and sustainable agriculture where healthy Canadian farm communities thrive includes diversity, equity, and inclusion to promote the representation and participation of persons of different ages, races and ethnicities, abilities and disabilities, genders, cultures, sexual orientations, and religion. We support a learning culture that raises awareness and takes action to support the industry against prejudice and discrimination in all its forms.
CASA believes that having leaders who reflect diversity in life experiences and cultural backgrounds contributes to more balanced Board deliberations and better decision-making. Creating an inclusive culture that embraces differences also best positions CASA to address evolving member needs.
There are many ways to support farm safety with CASA. Become a sponsor, donate to CASA’s charitable wing, the FarmSafe Foundation, become a CASA member, or become a Safety Day Coordinator in your community. Contact us for more information.
The Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) co-ordinates, develops and leads national initiatives to help farmers, their families and workers recognize and manage safety risks. CASA is funded in part by the Government of Canada under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a federal, provincial and territorial initiative and receives additional support from the agricultural and corporate sectors.
